Black Top Mesa Superstition Wilderness

Black Top Mesa trail elevation profile

Wide Open Desert Views

Proximity to Phoenix, great views and numerous interconnected trails make the Superstition Wilderness one of the most popular hiking areas in the state of Arizona - and the First Water trailhead among the most popular access points. This loop with the Dutchman's and Black Mesa trails includes a spur to the summit of Black Top Mesa overlooking Weaver's Needle to the south.

First climbing to Parker Pass, the Dutchman's Trail then descends into a basin and meets connections with several other trails. After a short, steep section of the Bull Pass Trail, an unmarked spur continues up the northern slope of Black Top Mesa to one of those most spectacular viewpoints in the western Superstition Wilderness. To make a loop with the return route, the Black Mesa Trail climbs north through a cholla forest, eventually connecting with the Second Water Trail near Garden Valley.
